What is a Medical Transcriptionist?

A medical transcriptionist is required to possess a high degree of skills in order to achieve work within the healthcare industry. A medical transcriptionist must be a fast, accurate typist as well as a good listener in order to interpret what is read and heard. In addition, a medical transcriptionist must have great grammar skills and know medical and pharmacology terminology. A medical transcriptionist must be able to hear it, edit it and transform a report into a logical report without changing relevant details or medical information. In other words, if a doctor does not have a good medical transcriptionist to interpret reports, the doctor is lost.
Much of a medical transcriptionist’s work is based on a doctor’s recording on audiotape or onto a computer. The medical transcriptionist must interpret the doctor’s report and therein lies the needed skill to listen carefully and interpret the correct diagnosis and medical treatment. Unfortunately, a doctor’s delivery might be as difficult to decipher as a written prescription so excellent listening skills, interpretation skills and terminology knowledge are highly important. In addition to listening skills, a medical transcriptionist must be able to discern and interpret information from a doctor with a foreign accent.
The field of medical transcription, while demanding is also in great demand. The healthcare industry is undergoing a tremendous amount of growth and needs qualified people to fill medical transcription positions or these jobs will be outsourced to companies abroad. It is important to decide how to construct the relevant information in a logical report that is as close to the original as possible.
